The arsenal of makeup brushes… Which ones to buy? Do you really need them? And if you do, what kinds of brushes are worth the money – natural or synthetic? I’ve been asked these questions so many times, that I decided to clear up the confusion once and for all.
Usually the makeup application process is easier and the makeup itself looks better and more natural if you use brushes. But whether you choose natural or synthetic doesn’t really matter; it is totally up to you and your budget, because you can achieve the same look with both kinds of brushes.
The difference between natural and synthetic brushes is that the natural-bristled ones feel softer, but you have to be extra careful not to use harsh solutions while cleaning them to prevent shedding. They are also more expensive, but at the same time they are long lasting with the right care (one set of natural brushes can serve you for a few years).
In case you decide to invest in a natural-bristle set, it’s necessary to mention that it is better to have certain kinds of brushes made from synthetic materials (like an eye liner brush and a concealer brush).
Brushes you need:
- Big powder brush
- Blush brush
- Eye shadow brush
- Angled brow brush (if you use shadow to define your brows)
- Flat eyeliner brush
- Lip brush
You can also get a concealer application brush or a sponge, although often it is best to use your fingertips to blend it into the skin, because any concealer blends and sinks in better after it gets warmed up by the heat of your fingers.
To take good care of your brushes and make them last longer, it is essential to clean them at least once every week or two. There is no need to spend extra money on a special cleaning solution, as mild shampoo and warm running water work just fine. Simply soap up the brushes in your hands and rinse them in water. Then gently pat them with a towel, reshape the bristles, and leave them hanging over the counter to dry overnight. They should be ready to use again by the time morning comes.
